Kayaking is a very popular water sport. It involves the use of a Kayak, which is a narrow boat, for moving over the water bodies such as a river, a lake or a sea. The person has to just keep on paddling the double blade paddle of the kayak to enjoy the waves and cool splashes of water. There are varying degrees of difficulty and requirement of skills depending on the water bodies and the surface level. For river or lake kayaking, participants need just basic skills and little knowledge about kayaking to be able to experience this exciting adventure sport. Ocean kayaking needs specialized skills and sophisticated boats as there are complex currents and big waves in the ocean, making such rides a dangerous one .It is a wonderful way to experience sailing in water. Keeping in mind some easy safety measures and with a little skill anyone can enjoy this water sport.

Relation To India:

India has been a popular destination for Kayaking. Indian tourists are very attracted to this recreational activity. Kayaking can be enjoyed on the  rivers of Brahmaputra, Subansari , Zanskar, Kali, river Ganga and its tributaries, Teesta ,Rangeet ,Sutlej, the Chenab, the Chandrabhaga, the Beas and also in many other other water bodies.

Tips / Precautions / Interesting Facts:

Kayaking is not advisable during the rainy and the winter seasons. The weather conditions, water level, tides, currents are some of the factors that need to be considered carefully to avoid any mishaps.


  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Carry a first-aid kit
  • Use float bags for safety
  • Go in a group


  • Don’t forget to use sunscreen and glasses
  • Don’t try to attempt any stunt on the moving kayak
  • Don’t forget to carry both hydrographic and topographic maps
